• Fennec families dig extensive sand burrows that can spread over as much as 120 m² and may contain up to fifteen separate entrances, providing multiple escape routes and ventilation. In compacted soils the tunnels become complex networks, sometimes linking directly to the burrows of neighbouring families, creating a communal underground system.
• In captivity a fennec fox can reach an age of fourteen years, whereas individuals living in the wild typically survive around ten years, a notable lifespan for such a small carnivore. Adults weigh between one and 1.9 kg, making them the lightest members of the canid family. Their relatively long life despite this low body mass reflects the species' efficient water-conserving kidneys and ability to obtain moisture from prey, reducing the need for frequent drinking.
• Fennec foxes form lifelong pairs and typically breed once each year. In captivity they reach sexual maturity at about nine months and mate from January to April, with females in estrus for roughly 24 hours. The copulation tie can last up to two hours and 45 minutes, after which the male becomes aggressive, guards the female and supplies her with food throughout pregnancy and lactation.
• The fennec fox hunts alone, digging in sand to capture small vertebrates and insects, and it often buries surplus prey to eat later, especially near human settlements. Its diet is highly varied, including rodents, lizards, birds, eggs, insects, fruits, leaves, roots and tubers. Because it extracts most of its water from prey, it only drinks when water is readily available.
