• A goldfinch's beak is so fine and precise it can extract a single seed from inside a thistle head while leaving the plant untouched — a trick no other European songbird can perform. They evolved this needle-like tool over millions of years to access food sources that competitors couldn't reach, which is why they're one of the few finches that actually thrive in fragmented farmland and gardens. • Goldfinches are born knowing how to sing, but only the males who hear adult singers in their first 40 days of life will sound like proper goldfinches — the rest sing a simplified, slightly broken version for life.
