About the European Golden Plover

The European golden plover (Pluvialis apricaria) cuts a striking figure across the tundra and moorlands of the far north. Thick-set and compact, its wings barely exceed the length of its tail, and a crisp white "s"-shaped band runs from forehead to flank, contrasting with the otherwise muted plumage. In flight the bird displays bright white axillary feathers, a hallmark that separates it from its slimmer, greyer-feathered American and Pacific cousins. When the first golden plover arrives in Iceland each spring, its cheerful, slightly descending "tuu" call signals the season’s turn, a cue celebrated in folklore as the herald of blooming life. Breeding pairs nest on Arctic tundra, Icelandic moorlands and the sub-arctic plateaus of Wales, Belarus and the now-lost Dartmoor colony that vanished around 2010. After the brief summer, they embark on a sweeping migration southwest to the milder fields of Europe, the plains of northwest Africa and the foothills of Iran, gathering in massive flocks over agricultural lands and short meadows. Their chicks are fed a diet of craneflies in the United Kingdom and march flies in Sweden, underscoring a surprising regional specialization in larval prey that fuels rapid growth before the fledglings take to the sky.
