• A kea can solve a puzzle box faster than a 6-year-old child — and they do it out of pure curiosity, not hunger. These New Zealand parrots have brains proportionally larger than most birds, and they'll spend hours dismantling car seals, tent zips, and roof flashing just to see what's inside. Their playfulness isn't a quirk; it's a sign of a mind built to problem-solve in an unpredictable alpine environment where food sources shift with every storm.
• Only 4,000 kea remain in the wild — down from tens of thousands a century ago — because farmers once shot them believing they killed sheep (they don't). The real threat is habitat loss and introduced predators that hunt their eggs. A single kea can live 50+ years in captivity but faces extinction in the next few decades unless protection expands beyond current reserves in New Zealand's South Island.
• Kea are the only alpine parrot on Earth, living higher than any other parrot species — sometimes above 2,000 metres where snow falls for months.
