• A female beewolf hunts between 10 and 30 honey bees per day — flying at 10 metres per second to intercept them in mid-air, then paralyzing each one with a precise sting to the nerve cord. She doesn't kill them. Instead, she buries each paralyzed bee in an underground cell where it becomes fresh food for her larvae for weeks, a living pantry that stays perfectly edible because the bee's body temperature stops rising at the moment of paralysis.
• The beewolf's hunting strategy is so effective that a single female can provision 4 to 8 cells in a season, each containing 5 to 15 live bees — meaning one beewolf can remove hundreds of honey bees from the landscape each year. In some regions, beewolf populations are so large that beekeepers have documented them raiding the same hives day after day, which is why farmers and hunters sometimes call them the 'bee killer wasp'.
• Male beewolves engage in a behaviour called 'sandcastle guarding' — they dig shallow pits in sand and sit in them for weeks, claiming the territory as their own while waiting for females to emerge from their pupation cells. A male's only purpose is to mate, and he doesn't feed at all during this period. He'll fight other males with his mandibles and use pheromones to advertise his patch, sometimes remaining motionless for hours.
• Beewolves raise their young in underground tunnels they excavate themselves — each female digs a burrow 20 to 30 centimetres deep and branches it into multiple cells, one per larva. She alone provisions every cell with paralyzed bees, guards the entrance, and tends the burrow for an entire season before her offspring pupate underground and emerge the following summer.
• Unlike their solitary cousins, many beewolf colonies aggregate into 'nesting sites' with hundreds or even thousands of females digging burrows within metres of each other in the same sandy bank or patch of ground. These colonies persist in the same location year after year, passed down through generations, creating wasp 'villages' that can support entire ecosystems of parasites, robber flies, and fungi that depend on the beewolves' presence to survive.
