• A cabbage bug can smell a single cabbage plant from 200 metres away — using antennae studded with chemoreceptors so sensitive they detect volatile compounds at concentrations of just a few molecules per billion air particles. Once landed, it tastes the leaf with its feet before deciding whether to feed or lay eggs, a two-stage quality check that makes it one of agriculture's most selective pests.
• Males perform a vibrational love song by drumming their abdomens against the leaf at frequencies between 100 and 200 Hz — a morse code of vibrations only females can feel through their feet. After mating, males guard the female for hours, wrestling rivals away with their legs locked in combat, because a female will mate with multiple males and sperm competition is fierce.
