• A wren weighs as much as three teaspoons of sugar, yet its heart beats 840 times per minute — faster than a hummingbird's. To fuel this metabolism, it must eat roughly every 20 minutes during daylight or starve. A single harsh winter can wipe out half a European wren population in weeks, making survival a constant sprint against the clock.
• The wren's song is absurdly loud for a bird the size of your thumb. At 90 decibels, it rivals a lawn mower and can be heard from 400 metres away — a feat no other European songbird matches at this body size. Males sing over 500 different phrases strung together in patterns only they can remember, a vocal encyclopedia built into a 10-gram brain.
