Edible Frog (Pelophylax esculentus).
The edible frog, Pelophylax kl. esculentus, is a hybrid that blends the traits of the pool frog and the marsh frog into a single amphibian. Females range from 5 to 9 cm (2.0–3.5 in) and males from 6 to 11 cm (2.4–4.3 in). Their bodies have dark spots, giving them names such as European dark-spotted frog and European black-spotted pond frog. Their habitat spans a broad swath of Europe, from the northern half of France across western Russia, and from Estonia and Denmark down to Bulgaria and northern Italy, and they have been introduced to Spain, Norway, and the United Kingdom. They reproduce by hybridogenesis, a hemiclonal mode where half of their genome is passed on unchanged while the other half is refreshed through backcrosses with a parental species. Their legs are used as a delicacy, especially in France, Germany, and Italy.
