• A creature the size of a small cat can kill prey three times its own weight. Eastern quolls hunt at night using a hunting strategy borrowed from big cats—stalking, pouncing, and a killing bite to the back of the neck. They take down rabbits, young wallabies, and possums twice their 3 kg body mass, making them one of Australia's fiercest small predators despite being mistaken for a gentle marsupial.
• Spotted fur that changes pattern with age is a Eastern quoll's ID card. Joeys are born unmarked; dark spots appear gradually over their first year until they wear the full leopard-like coat that gives them away in the darkness. By adulthood, their 6 kg frame is covered in white spots against grey or reddish fur—a pattern so distinctive that researchers can photo-identify individuals like fingerprints.
• They were extinct on mainland Australia for decades, then came roaring back through human hands. By the 1960s, mainland populations had vanished due to introduced foxes and feral cats; only island populations in Tasmania survived. Between 2012 and 2015, conservationists reintroduced over 300 quolls to predator-proof reserves on the mainland—a species resurrection that has let some populations climb from zero back to sustainable numbers.
