- A captive female eastern meadow vole can produce an extraordinary number of offspring, with one individual recorded to have produced 17 litters in a single year, totalling 83 young. Her own daughter was even more prolific, delivering 13 litters and 78 offspring before she reached one year of age. This rapid breeding is made possible by the species' early sexual maturity, as females may ovulate and become pregnant at just three weeks old.
- Gestation in eastern meadow voles is remarkably brief, lasting only 20 to 23 days before pink, hairless newborns emerge with their eyes and ears sealed shut. Within three days the kits begin to sprout fur, and by the end of the first week their bellies are fully furred. Their eyes and ears open at eight days, and they are weaned between twelve and fourteen days of age, allowing them to become independent quickly.
- Population density of eastern meadow voles can vary dramatically, with typical old-field habitats supporting about 15 to 45 individuals per acre, but in especially favourable marshes numbers may rise to 150 per acre. In northern prairie wetlands peak densities have been recorded at more than 1,482 voles per hectare (600 per acre), far exceeding the usual range.
- Eastern meadow voles live in dense colonies where individuals share communal latrine sites, yet they are far from peaceful. Within these groups the animals display strong social aggression, with females consistently asserting dominance over males and both sexes frequently engaging in fights. Males are especially prone to combat each other during the breeding season, defending portions of their home ranges against rivals.
