• At 34 km/h, Dall's porpoises are the fastest cetaceans in the Northern Hemisphere — they hit these speeds in short bursts, their stocky 2-metre bodies cutting through cold water like torpedoes. They're so quick that boats often can't keep up. This extreme velocity costs energy, which is why they spend most of their time cruising slowly, then explosively accelerate to catch fish and squid in the dark waters of the North Pacific.
• Dall's porpoises create a unique water disturbance called a 'rooster tail' — a spray that shoots up behind them as they surface, visible from kilometres away on calm days. No other porpoise does this. The rooster tail is a byproduct of their bullet-shaped body and speed: water gets pushed so hard it can't follow the curve of their back, so it explodes upward instead. It's become their calling card to researchers.
• A Dall's porpoise's brain is proportionally larger than a human's relative to body size, and they hunt using echolocation clicks at 130 decibels — loud enough to disorient prey and potentially stun small fish before attacking. Their clicks are so precise they can distinguish between different species of squid in total darkness, hunting in the deepest, coldest corners of the North Pacific where light never reaches.
• Dall's porpoises were nearly invisible to science until the 1980s because they live in some of the most remote waters on Earth — the Bering Sea, the waters around Japan, and the Aleutian Islands. Today, an estimated 700,000 individuals exist, but they're hunted by killer whales so persistently that they've evolved a behaviour unique among porpoises: they form groups of 10 to 20 animals that attack orcas as a coordinated mob, ramming them with their hard dorsal fin and body.
• Every Dall's porpoise calf is born at a specific time of year — late spring and early summer — and gestation lasts exactly 10.4 months, one of the shortest pregnancies of any cetacean. This tight reproductive window means all calves are born into warming waters when food is most abundant, a strategy honed over thousands of years in the unpredictable North Pacific. Missing this window by even a few weeks can mean starvation for a newborn.
