• The dugong is the only living member of the once-diverse family Dugongidae, making it a unique survivor within the order Sirenia, which contains just four extant species. Its closest modern relative, the Steller's sea cow, was driven to extinction by hunting in the 18th century, leaving the dugong as the sole representative of its lineage. This isolation highlights the species' distinct evolutionary heritage and underscores the importance of its conservation.
• The largest recorded dugong measured 4.06 metres in length and weighed 1,016 kilograms off the Saurashtra coast of western India, far exceeding the size of most individuals. In contrast, adult dugongs rarely grow beyond 3 metres, with typical weights ranging from 250 to 900 kilograms and most individuals around 420 kilograms.
• Dugongs possess unusually solid ribs and long bones, a condition known as pachyostosis, which makes their skeletons some of the densest in the animal kingdom. These heavy bones act as ballast, allowing the animal to remain slightly submerged without expending excessive energy. By counteracting buoyancy, this adaptation enables the dugong to graze efficiently on benthic seagrass beds while maintaining a stable position in the water column.
• Unlike any other marine mammal, the dugong feeds exclusively on seagrass in fully marine waters. Manatees, its relatives, must venture into fresh or brackish water to feed.
• Dugongs can live beyond 70 years and reproduce very slowly, making population recovery difficult. These life-history traits heighten their risk of extinction.
