Fascinating facts about the Dugong

• A dugong can eat 40 kilograms of seagrass in a single day — enough to fill a large bathtub. They're one of only four marine mammals that are fully herbivorous, spending their entire lives grazing on underwater meadows from dawn until dusk. As they mow through seagrass beds, they engineer the ecosystem: their feeding trails create channels that help nutrients flow, younger seagrass shoots regenerate in their wake, and fish shelter in the disturbed patches. Lose the dugongs, and the entire seagrass meadow begins to collapse.
• Dugongs never leave the water. Not once in their 70-year lifespan do they haul out onto land or ice like seals and manatees do. They're born underwater, nurse underwater, and even sleep while floating just below the surface, surfacing to breathe every few minutes without fully waking. This commitment to the ocean means they're locked to one habitat type forever — if seagrass vanishes, they have nowhere else to go.
• A mother dugong nurses her calf for up to two years, the longest nursing period of any marine mammal except whales. A single calf is born every three to seven years, making dugongs one of the slowest-reproducing marine mammals on Earth. This means a population cannot bounce back from hunting pressure — a single generation of overhunting can collapse numbers for decades. They were hunted to extinction across the Mediterranean by the 1700s, leaving only fragmented populations scattered across the Indo-Pacific today.
• Fossil evidence shows dugongs have grazed seagrass meadows for over 50 million years, unchanged in their basic anatomy since the age of dinosaurs. Their closest living relative isn't the manatee — it's the elephant. Both share hoofed ancestors, and both evolved tusks and grinding teeth to process tough plant matter. A dugong's tusks grow throughout its life, emerging as tusks only in adult males, and can reach 50 centimetres long.
• In Indigenous cultures across the Indo-Pacific, dugongs hold spiritual significance that runs deeper than mere hunting tradition. In several Pacific island nations, dugongs are central to creation stories and seasonal ceremonies that structure the entire calendar. Today, fewer than 250,000 dugongs remain in the wild — poaching for meat and tusks, along with fishing net entanglement and seagrass habitat loss from coastal development, has eliminated them from over half their historical range in less than 50 years.
