• Their tiny rigid sail acts as an aerofoil, always aligning with the wind so the colony drifts downwind at a slight angle. The sail projects into the air and catches the wind, effectively working like a small wing. Because the animal has no other means of locomotion, it is completely dependent on prevailing breezes to travel across the ocean surface. This wind-driven sailing is therefore the sole way the colony moves.
• When tides recede, thousands can be stranded, forming a line of dying animals many centimetres deep and stretching across hundreds of kilometres of beach. Such events often happen in spring along the West Coast of North America, from British Columbia down to California, beginning in the north and moving south over weeks. Under certain wind conditions the colonies are driven onto shore in huge numbers.
• Each colony is either 'diagonal' or 'antidiagonal', a left- or right-handed form that looks like mirror images of each other. This chirality determines the direction they are carried by the wind; in the northern Pacific, diagonal colonies are swept eastward toward the west coast of North America. Antidiagonal colonies, by contrast, drift westward toward eastern Asian shores such as Japan.
• The feeding polyps called gonozooids generate countless tiny medusae by asexual budding, releasing thousands of jelly-like offspring that are only about one millimetre in size. Each of these minute medusae carries a suite of zooxanthellae, the same symbiotic algae that power many corals, allowing them to harvest sunlight for energy. In laboratory conditions the medusae reach sexual maturity in roughly three weeks before spawning the next generation.
• Velella's tentacles are armed with nematocysts that deliver toxins potent enough to immobilise their planktonic prey, yet the sting is comparatively mild for humans. Contact with the cells can cause skin irritation, but the reaction varies from person to person and is generally short-lived.
