Dorantes Longtail

Fascinating facts about the Dorantes Longtail

• The lilac-banded longtail inhabits a broad core zone that stretches from the southern tip of South America in Argentina, climbs north through Central America and Mexico, and includes the West Indies before reaching the Gulf coast of the United States in southern Texas and peninsular Florida. Within this expanse the species finds suitable habitats and host plants across many countries.
• Occasional Dorantes longtails break out of their normal range and travel to the most northerly points where they have been documented. These wanderers have been spotted in northern California, southern Arizona, southern Missouri and North Carolina, marking the extreme limits of the species' observed distribution.
• In southern Florida and southern Texas the butterfly can produce three to four generations each year. The warm climate of these regions allows the species to develop continuously, so adults emerge and lay eggs repeatedly throughout the year. This rapid turnover means that a single population may complete up to four full life cycles before the season ends, sustaining its numbers in the subtropical zone.
• Caterpillars rely on a range of legumes such as wild and cultivated Phaseolus, Desmodium and the blue pea Clitoria. These plants serve as the documented host species that the larvae feed on, providing the nutrients needed for growth and development. By consuming these legumes, the young butterflies are able to complete their larval stage before pupating into adults.
