• A dassie rat's spine is so flexible it can squeeze through gaps only 1.3 centimetres wide — narrower than a AA battery — even though its body is 15 centimetres long. This extreme spinal compression happens because their vertebrae can shift sideways, a trick almost no other mammal can perform. They've traded rigid support for an escape route predators can't follow into their rocky refuges.
• Dassie rats are one of the few mammals that can't sweat or pant, yet they thrive in the scorching rocky outcrops of southern Africa where ground temperatures exceed 60°C.
