Fascinating facts about the Dassie Rat
- Its skull is flattened and its ribs bend like a spring, letting the dassie rat slip into cracks. The animal can even nurse its newborns from the side of its body while both are jammed into a narrow fissure, thanks to teats that sit on the torso's flanks. This extreme flexibility, described as an "incredibly flexible axial skeleton," lets it hide from predators in spaces that larger mammals cannot reach, giving it a safe refuge in the harsh desert outcrops.
- A strict herbivore, the dassie rat munches grasses, leaves, stems, flowers, fruits and seeds, and even refuses offered insects. It ferments tough plant fibers in a large cecum of its hindgut, where bacteria break down cellulose. Uniquely, it excretes two pellet types: dry, hard ones and soft, nutrient-rich ones that it immediately re-eats to reclaim vitamins. This double-pellet system maximises nutrient extraction.
- Dassie rats form lifelong monogamous pairs that share a single rock shelter and jointly defend a common home range. Both male and female guard the territory. When threatened, a pair will dart into a thin crevice and emit a single whistling note to warn any nearby conspecifics. in a landscape where predators and rival rock hyraxes compete for the same shelters.
