• Every winter, the northern collared lemming's fur turns pure white — but not because of temperature. A gene triggered by shorter daylight hours rewires their entire coat in just 8–12 weeks, camouflaging them against snow while predators like snowy owls hunt. Come spring, the same daylight cue flips the switch back to brown. They're one of only a handful of mammals on Earth that undergo this colour-coded seasonal swap.
• Lemmings don't actually commit mass suicide by running off cliffs — that's a 1950s Disney hoax — but their populations do crash in a cycle so dramatic that indigenous peoples called it the lemming year. Every 3–4 years, a population boom (driven by mild winters and thick lichen growth) is followed by a 90% collapse within months. Predators gorge during the boom, then starve when lemmings vanish, creating a boom-bust wave that ripples across the entire Arctic food web.
