Darter Characine

Fascinating facts about the Darter Characine

• In 1879 Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner first named this fish Paradon affinis, with its type locality given as La Plata in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. In 1916, Carl H. Eigenmann created the genus Apareiodon.
• At just 14.3 cm long, about the length of a standard ruler, this fish sports a sleek, fusiform body and a mouth tucked under its head. Its pectoral fin carries a single, unbranched ray that it uses like a tiny stool to prop itself on the river bottom. Such a minimalist design shows how evolution can strip away excess while keeping function.
• When large submerged plants vanished from a Paraná River reservoir, this species surged while others faded, proving it can thrive in open water without the shelter of macrophytes. Its diet of diatoms, green algae, and plant periderm lets it scrape nutrition directly from surfaces. This flexibility reveals how some fish turn habitat loss into opportunity.
• In the Upper Paraná basin, males carry 54 chromosomes while females have 55, a rare case where the sex chromosomes are ZW1W2 for females and ZZ for males. Yet in the distant Cuiabá River, every individual, male or female, has 54 chromosomes. This chromosomal split across nearby waters shows how populations can diverge genetically without moving.
• Reproduction happens entirely in the open: eggs are fertilized outside the body and then left to drift, with no parents watching over the young. The species never migrates, staying put in its river home. This strategy underscores a life built on sheer numbers rather than parental investment.

About the Darter Characine

The darter characine, Apareiodon affinis, is a sleek, fusiform fish that rarely exceeds 14.3 cm (5.6 in) in length. Its most distinctive feature is a mouth tucked beneath the head, equipped with a poorly developed upper lip and no dentary teeth, allowing it to scrape algae from submerged surfaces. A single, unbranched pectoral fin-ray acts like a tiny prop, letting the fish perch on the riverbed as it feeds. Found throughout the Río de la Plata Basin, spanning southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina, this modest characine inhabits the open waters of large rivers and reservoirs, thriving especially where submerged macrophytes have been cleared. Apareiodon affinis subsists on a diet of diatoms, green algae and the periderm of aquatic plants, inadvertently harvesting the algae as it scrapes the vegetation. Its reproductive life is equally unpretentious: external fertilisation occurs without any parental care, and the species is non-migratory. Perhaps the most surprising trait lies in its genetics; populations in the Upper Paraná basin display a ZW-type sex-determination system with males at 2n = 54 and females at 2n = 55, while those in the Cuiabá River are uniformly 2n = 54. This chromosomal dance hints at hidden evolutionary nuances beneath the fish’s modest exterior, urging the curious observer to look deeper into the river’s quiet inhabitants.
