• Blindness in A. mexicanus induces a disruption of early neuromast patterning, which further causes asymmetries in cranial bone structure. One such asymmetry is a bend in the dorsal region of their skull, which is propounded to increase water flow to the opposite side of the face, functionally enhancing sensory input and spatial mapping in the dark waters of caves. The blind form of the Mexican tetra can store four times more energy as fat, allowing it to deal with irregular food supplies more effectively, a key advantage in nutrient-poor subterranean habitats.
• Currently, about 30 cave populations are known, dispersed over three geographically distinct areas in a karst region of San Luis Potosí and far southern Tamaulipas, northeastern Mexico. Among them are at least three with only full cave forms, at least eleven with cave, "normal" and intermediate forms. Genetic work shows at least two distinct lineages and that the distribution arose by at least five independent invasions, with the entire cave colonisation occurring in less than 20,000 years, a blink in evolutionary time that still produced fully blind, depigmented fish.
• Even without eyes, Mexican tetra cavefish navigate their pitch-black world using an ultra-sensitive lateral line that detects minute water-pressure changes, a system comparable to the echolocation of bats and cetaceans. This mechanosensory array lets them locate prey and obstacles instantly, compensating for the loss of vision. The fish's dorsal skull bend further channels water flow toward these sensors, sharpening spatial awareness and demonstrating how structural remodeling can boost a non-visual sense in total darkness.
• The blind cave tetra is a hardy species whose lack of sight does not hinder its ability to locate food, making it a favorite among aquarists. Stock for the aquarium trade originates from the Cueva Chica Cave collected in 1936 and has since been bred for troglomorphic traits at commercial facilities, especially in Asia. Experiments have shown that keeping these fish in bright aquarium set-ups has no effect on the development of the skin flap that forms over their eyes as they grow, confirming that light exposure does not reverse their blind adaptations.
• Maturing at a total length of about 12 cm (4.7 in), the Mexican tetra prefers subtropical waters with a pH of 6.5-8, hardness up to 30 dGH, and temperatures between 20 °C and 25 °C (68 °F, 77 °F). In the wild it inhabits rocky and sandy bottoms of pools, backwaters, and small to large rivers, feeding on insects, crustaceans and worms. In captivity it readily accepts frozen, live or commercial foods, reflecting its omnivorous diet and making it a versatile, sociable schooling fish for community tanks.
