About the Freshwater Minnow

The pale chub, Zacco platypus, is a sleek, silvery fish that glides through the swift, cool streams of northern China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and northern Vietnam. Its body tapers to a rounded back, capped by a distinctive black longitudinal stripe and a forked caudal fin whose upper lobe is shorter than the lower. Bright yellow pelvic fins contrast with the duller pectoral and tail fins, while a moderately large head bears eyes set high on the skull and a mouth that reaches the front of the eye. Adults typically measure 13 cm, though they can reach 20 cm, and their cycloid scales are larger along the flanks, forming a complete lateral line of 42–46 scales. Males display striking bluish vertical strips and sharp nuptial tubercles during the breeding season, turning the riverbed into a vibrating arena of sand and sperm. In their preferred habitats, shallow, fast-flowing sections of freshwater rivers and mountainous streams with temperatures around 23–24 °C, pale chubs linger near the bottom, hunting zooplankton, small invertebrates, algae and occasional fish. Young fish form dawn-time hunting groups, while adults become more solitary. Their diet shifts from insect larvae in youth to a broader omnivorous palette in adulthood. A surprising trait is their tolerance of varied environmental stresses, allowing them to persist for six years or more despite the pressures of predation and habitat alteration, and to become an invasive presence in Taiwan where they outcompete native species.
