About the Croaking Gourami

The croaking gourami (Trichopsis vittata) is a diminutive labyrinth fish that glides through the still waters of Southeast Asia, its iridescent blue-edged median fins flashing against a backdrop of pale brown, green or even deep purple hues. Adults average about 5 cm (2.0 in) but can reach 6–7 cm (2.4–2.8 in), their flanks marked by two to four brown or black stripes or rows of spots, and a bright blue or purple iris that catches the light. Males display a pointed dorsal fin and longer anal fin, while females are slightly paler with a rounded dorsal fin, a subtle sexual dimorphism that becomes pronounced during the breeding season. In the quiet of paddy fields, canals and ponds of Java, Borneo, Sumatra, Malaya, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, they linger among reeds and broad-leafed plants, surfacing occasionally to gulp air through a specialized labyrinth organ, a trait shared by all Anabantoidei. Their most surprising trait is the ability to croak: both sexes rhythmically grind their pectoral fins to emit audible grunts or chirps, a vocalization used in courtship displays and male dominance duels that can persist for hours. In captivity, these shy, peaceful fish thrive in heavily planted tanks of at least 40 L (11 U.S. gal), preferring shaded surfaces, a slightly acidic pH of 6.8, and temperatures around 26–29 °C (79–84 °F), where they continue to showcase their croaking rituals while quietly patrolling the water’s surface.
