• The crested fireback's tail feathers curve upward so sharply they form a perfect fan that points nearly at the bird's own head — a design so extreme that males have to angle their whole body forward just to walk without tripping over their own plumage. This peacock-like display is purely for impressing females, yet it makes the bird 40% slower at escaping predators, a trade-off evolution decided was worth the cost of survival.
• In the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, the male crested fireback scratches the forest floor with his feet up to 200 times per minute, flicking leaf litter backwards with such violence that the sound travels 50 metres through dense undergrowth.
