Fascinating facts about the Green Peafowl
- Male green peafowls are among the largest of their kind, reaching a total length of up to three metres when the long train is included. Their train itself measures between 1.4 and 1.6 metres, giving the bird a spectacular trailing display. In addition to this impressive length they possess a broad wingspan that averages about 1.2 metres and can extend to 1.6 metres in the biggest males, aiding their ability to stay aloft despite a heavy body.
- The male's upper-tail covert feathers are exceptionally long, stretching up to two metres and decorated with striking eyespots that form a dazzling train during the breeding season. Outside of this period the male sheds the train, making it difficult to tell sexes apart without close observation. Females, by contrast, have much shorter green coverts that simply cover the tail and lack the ornamental eyespots, giving them a more modest appearance.
- Even with a bulky frame, the green peafowl can sustain energy-intensive flight and is frequently seen beating its wings in a true flapping motion. Observers note that this species rarely glides, a behaviour that sets it apart from many other large birds. When viewed from a distance the bird appears dark-coloured with pale vermilion primaries, and the distinctive flapping flight makes it easy to recognise in the air.
- Male green peafowls are solitary and fiercely territorial, yet they gather groups of females into harems rather than performing lek displays. They are highly territorial and form harems with no pair bonds.
- In 2020 a landmark Chinese lawsuit halted a hydropower project after green peafowls were found on the Jiasa River, marking the nation's first preventive public-interest case for wildlife. The decision set a new conservation precedent.
