• A hoatzin chick has claws on its wings — two sharp hooks it uses to climb back into trees after diving into water to escape predators. No other living bird has them. These aren't vestigial remnants; chicks lose them by 3 months old, suggesting a strategy so effective it evolved specifically for the vulnerable nestling stage, then gets jettisoned once flight arrives.
• The hoatzin ferments leaves in an oversized crop — essentially a fermentation chamber before a true stomach — turning it into a functional ruminant despite being a bird. This digestion takes 18 to 24 hours and produces so much gas the bird reeks of manure, earning it the nickname 'stinkbird'. Only one other bird family does this, making the hoatzin a walking lesson in convergent evolution.
• Hoatzins taste revolting to predators — their flesh has the flavour of decomposing vegetation, a chemical echo of their leafy diet that lingers on the tongue.
