• From tiny forest edges to bustling Rio streets, common marmosets slipped out of captivity in the 1920s and by 1929 were spotted wild in Rio de Janeiro, turning the city's trees into a new frontier. Their spread has sparked alarms over genetic pollution of the native buffy-tufted marmoset and added pressure on bird nests they raid for eggs and chicks. This rapid, human-driven invasion shows how a single pet trade can rewrite a species' map and threaten local biodiversity.
• In July 2014 a female common marmoset became the first New World monkey to have its entire DNA mapped, revealing a 2.26-billion-base-pair genome that houses 21,168 genes. Though its segmental duplications total 138 Mb, just under 5 % of the genome, they are slightly fewer than in humans or chimps yet more than in orangutans.
• When fruit thins from January to April, common marmosets turn to tree sap, gum and resin, which make up 20-70 % of their meals. Their claw-like nails and chisel-shaped incisors let them carve holes in bark and sip the exudates, a reliable fallback in seasonal forests. Insects still matter, contributing 24-30 % of their diet, and the tiny primates can stalk and ambush these prey thanks to their diminutive size. • A typical common marmoset family is a tight-knit troupe of about nine individuals, though groups can swell to fifteen. Only one or two females and a single male get to reproduce, while the rest act as helpers, grooming and defending the young. The breeding pair shares dominance, and the male often assists the female in infant care. This cooperative breeding system spreads the heavy workload of raising twins.
• Female marmosets carry their babies for five months, then usually deliver non-identical twins whose combined weight can reach 40 % of the mother's body mass. Within ten days the mother is ready to breed again, and the father and older siblings immediately begin carrying the newborns. The sheer size of the twins explains why females mate with multiple males, polyandry spreads the energetic burden of infant care across several fathers.
