About the Common Gull

The common gull (Larus canus) is a sleek, medium-sized seabird, 40–46 cm in length with a 100–115 cm wingspan, its grey upperparts and white underparts framed by black wingtips tipped with striking white "mirrors" on the outer primaries. In breeding plumage the bill is a clean, green-tinged yellow, unmarked save for its graceful taper, while the legs blaze yellow before dulling in winter. A high-pitched, laughing call carries across the cool temperate coasts where these gulls breed from Iceland and Scotland eastward to Kamchatka, nesting in colonies on the ground, low trees, or marsh islands. Their life cycle is swift: both parents share incubation of three eggs for 24–26 days, and the precocial chicks fledge after about 35 days, taking up to four years to reach full adult plumage in the Kamchatka subspecies. Omnivorous by nature, the common gull scavenges carrion and human refuse with equal aplomb, yet it also hunts small prey, displaying a versatile foraging strategy that underpins its success across a range stretching from the Mediterranean and Black Sea to the seas of China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. A surprising trait is its rapid maturation, most individuals are fully grown by their third year, though the Kamchatka form may linger up to four, allowing populations to rebound quickly after local disturbances, a resilience reflected in their estimated one million breeding pairs worldwide, the bulk of which nest in Europe.
