• A whimbrel weighing just 350 grams will fly non-stop from Alaska to South America — a journey of 9,000 kilometres over open ocean with no place to land or refuel. They do it twice a year. Before departure, they nearly double their body weight in fat, then burn it all crossing the Atlantic, arriving with barely enough energy left to stay alive.
