• A common eland can jump 3 metres straight up from a standing start — high enough to clear a car roof — despite weighing up to 1,000 kilograms. That's the equivalent of a grand piano launching itself over a house. They use this explosive power to escape predators and vault over obstacles when migrating across the savanna, a trick that lets them move through terrain no other large antelope can navigate.
• Elands don't sweat to cool down like most mammals do. Instead, their body temperature rises and falls with the day — sometimes fluctuating by 5°C between morning and afternoon. This quirk saves them thousands of litres of water annually in a landscape where a single waterhole might be 100 kilometres away. It's an adaptation so efficient that conservationists are studying it to help other species survive future droughts.
• A herd of elands can smell rain falling 30 kilometres away and will abandon their current feeding grounds to track it across the savanna. They follow storms like nomads, arriving at fresh grassland just as it sprouts after downpour. This behaviour means their migration routes shift unpredictably each year — sometimes travelling over 3,000 kilometres — making them nearly impossible to confine to a single reserve.
• Male elands produce a loud clicking sound from a tendon in their front leg — a noise so deep it travels through the ground before reaching ears, allowing herds separated by dust clouds or dense grass to stay in contact without visual contact. The click also signals dominance; the louder the click, the higher a male's social rank. It's a sound only elands make among all African antelope.
• Elands were hunted so intensively for meat that their population dropped below 10,000 in the 1960s, yet today there are roughly 250,000 left — making them one of Africa's great conservation comebacks.
