• The clouded border sometimes appears almost entirely white or completely black, a striking deviation that is recorded as rare. This extreme colouration sits at the outer end of a species that is described as extremely variable. In most individuals the amount of black varies, with males usually showing more extensive black margins than females, though exceptions occur. Such rare forms are therefore infrequently observed in the field.
• The clouded border overwinters in the pupal stage, and this dormant phase can extend for up to four years, dramatically lengthening its life cycle. After this prolonged period the adult emerges in early summer, when the species is active at night during June and July. The moth is then attracted to light, a behaviour that aids observers in locating the newly emerged individuals. This seasonal timing links the long pupal pause to the brief adult flight window.
• Clouded border eggs are yellow-green and have a hexagonal reticulation. The larvae are pale green with darker dorsal lines and a purplish anal spot.
• The clouded border is a geometrid moth whose range spans much of Eurasia. It occurs across most of Europe, the Urals, western and central Siberia, Transbaikalia, Kazakhstan, the Tian-Shan mountains, northern Mongolia and parts of the Near East.
