• A pronounced spur projects from the underside of its abdomen, extending to the anterior margin of the procoxae, a length that clearly separates it from the shorter-spurred R. brevispina. It reaches 14-16 mm in overall length and prefers warm deciduous forests, parks and gardens where it can be seen crawling on foliage.
• The hind femur carries a single isolated black spot on the anteroventral side of the apical half, a marking that is absent in its close relative R. This spot is complemented by largely blackish last tarsomeres, while the first and second tarsomeres may show brown or black tips. Such leg colouration, together with the unique femoral spot, provides a reliable field character for distinguishing the species.
• Its flight is clumsy and slow, producing a noticeable humming sound as it moves, which marks it as a poor flier. Adults are active throughout the year but display diurnal, thermophilic activity, preferring warm conditions in their forest and garden habitats. When disturbed, the bug releases a strong-smelling secretion, a defensive trait common to Pentatomidae. These behaviours together explain why it is often seen walking rather than flying.
• When the bug is disturbed it releases an off-white fluid that can be harmful if swallowed, and the chemicals in that fluid keep its eggs fertilisable even in highly acidic or basic conditions. The species can lay a large number of eggs at once, often depositing them in lines or discs on plant parts. This protective secretion means the eggs can develop in a wide range of micro-habitats without being compromised.
