Fascinating facts about the Cinnabar Moth

• A caterpillar that eats only ragwort doesn't just tolerate poison — it weaponises it. The cinnabar moth's larvae stockpile toxic alkaloids from ragwort plants and store them in their own tissues, making themselves poisonous to predators. This stolen defense lasts into adulthood: a bird that pecks a cinnabar moth once will vomit and never touch one again. Their scarlet wings and black bands are nature's warning label, broadcast to every predator that has learned the lesson.
• The transformation from camouflaged caterpillar to neon-winged moth is so dramatic it seems like evolution hedged its bets. Larvae are banded yellow and black — conspicuous on ragwort, but still vulnerable to some predators who haven't learned caution. Once the moth emerges, it abandons subtlety entirely: shocking red and black wings that screams 'poison' across a 10-metre radius. This switch from cryptic to honest signalling happens in the cocoon, a complete rebrand for a complete body.
• In its native range across Europe and temperate Asia, the cinnabar moth has become so dependent on ragwort that it cannot survive without it. But humans introduced ragwort to Australia and New Zealand as an ornamental in the 1800s, and the moth followed. Scientists deliberately released cinnabar moths in Australia and South Africa as biological control, successfully using a moth born 6,000 kilometres away to control an invasive plant. What began as an accident became deliberate strategy — turning an Old World specialist into a human-deployed weapon against invaders.
• Unlike most moths, cinnabar adults are active during daylight hours, winging through dry grasslands from May to July with a slow, fluttering flight that looks almost clumsy. This diurnal behaviour is not a weakness; it's the logical end of their strategy. If you're poisonous and visually defended, there's no advantage to hiding in darkness. Instead, being visible in daytime is the entire point — the more predators that see your red and black pattern, the faster they learn to avoid you.
• A single female cinnabar can lay 100–200 eggs across several ragwort plants, clustering them on leaves and stems. The caterpillars hatch gregarious, feeding in groups on the same plant until they've stripped it bare, then marching together to find the next one. This collective visibility — dozens of yellow-and-black striped caterpillars on open vegetation — is a gamble. But predators learn faster when many individuals share one warning signal, so the group defence pays off. Every larva that survives to reproduce has broadcast the poison message louder than it could alone.
