Fascinating facts about the Central American Squirrel Monkey
- The Central American squirrel monkey is the only squirrel monkey that lives outside South America. It inhabits the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and Panama, being confined to the north-western tip of Panama near the Costa Rican border and to the central and southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Its strongest concentrations are in Manuel Antonio and Corcovado National Parks, where the species is most commonly seen.
- The subspecies S. citrinellus, which occupies the Central Pacific region of Costa Rica, is now extremely rare. The most recent 2003 survey estimated that only between 1,300 and 1,800 individuals remain in the wild. This tiny population represents the entire remaining wild stock of that subspecies, highlighting its precarious conservation status.
- Central American squirrel monkeys live in groups that contain about 60 % more females than males, yet females show no dominance hierarchies and do not form coalitions. Male monkeys are usually related and only develop a dominance hierarchy during the September breeding season. Outside that period the troop functions with an unusually egalitarian social system for a primate.
- To snatch tent-making bats, the monkey seeks out their leaf-fold tents, climbs above and leaps onto the shelter, trying to dislodge the bat. If the fallen bat does not fly away in time, the monkey pounces on it on the ground and eats it.
- Females leave their birth group once sexually mature, yet males may stay with their natal troop for life. Females become sexually mature at about two and a half years, whereas males do not mature until four to five years old.
