Fascinating facts about the Cecropia Moth

• The cecropia moth is recognised as the largest native moth in North America, with females routinely reaching a wingspan of five to seven inches (13 to 18 cm) and occasionally exceeding that size. Their broad wings are a brownish hue, coloured red near the forewing base, and each wing bears a distinctive crescent-shaped red spot with a whitish centre, the hindwings displaying the larger of these markings.
• Male cecropia moths locate potential mates by sensing the female's pheromone plume, a capability that extends to a distance of up to one mile. In pursuit of a signal they may travel as far as seven miles, guided by their highly sensitive antennae. Mating activity generally commences in the early morning and can continue until evening, providing a relatively brief window for successful reproduction each year.
• Adult cecropia moths emerge without functional mouthparts or a digestive system, a trait shared with other giant silk moths. Because they cannot feed, they rely entirely on energy reserves accumulated during the larval stage and survive for roughly two weeks as adults. This short adult lifespan confines all essential activities, mating and egg-laying, to a narrow seasonal period.
• The cecropia silkworm provided the first description of the insect juvenile hormone. Its abdomen contained enough hormone to be extracted from a single specimen.
• Cecropia moth caterpillars feed on a range of hardwoods, most often maple but also cherry, birch and many other tree species. Their development proceeds through five larval instars, each lasting about a week, and by the final instar in autumn the caterpillars measure roughly 4 to 4.5 inches (100 to 110 mm) in length.
