Fascinating facts about the Cape Cobra

• A Cape cobra can spit venom up to 2.5 metres with enough accuracy to aim for the eyes — and its venom is potent enough to kill a human in under an hour. The snake doesn't need to bite; it's weaponised its fangs into a delivery system that works mid-strike, spraying a neurotoxin that causes blindness within minutes if it hits the face. This makes it one of the few snakes that can kill prey or defend itself without closing its mouth.
• The Cape cobra's hood — that iconic flare of neck skin — isn't just for show; it's a hydraulic structure pumped full of blood that expands in under a second. The pattern on the hood's underside is unique to each individual, like a fingerprint. When threatened, the snake rears up, spreads the hood, and hisses so loudly it can be heard 10 metres away, buying time to escape or, if cornered, to strike.
• In the Kalahari Desert, Cape cobras hunt almost exclusively at dusk when temperatures drop, moving through burrows and rocky crevices where thermal imaging would be useless — but they don't need eyes. Two organs called the Jacobson's pits run along the roof of their mouth, sampling airborne particles to build a chemical map of their surroundings so detailed they can hunt blind mammals underground without ever seeing them.
• The Cape cobra's venom is a cocktail of neurotoxins and cardiotoxins that work simultaneously: some shut down the nervous system while others stop the heart. A single milligram can kill a mouse in seconds, yet in southern Africa's traditional medicine, Cape cobra venom is sometimes used in minuscule amounts as part of pain treatments — the same toxin that kills is calibrated, in extreme doses, to numb.
• Baby Cape cobras are born live, not from eggs, and they arrive fully venomous and aggressive from day one — there's no learning curve. A newborn is only 20 centimetres long but packs enough neurotoxin to kill an adult human if it delivers a full bite. This head start means they're independent predators within hours of birth, hunting lizards and insects in the same deserts where their mothers hunt mammals 30 times their size.
