• At 15 centimetres long, the camel spider can sprint at 16 kilometres per hour — faster than a human can run. But the real horror is what happens when it catches you: its jaws can open nearly 90 degrees and compress with enough force to pierce thick skin. Despite the name, they've never bitten a camel in their life; the legend was born when soldiers found them sheltering in camel carcasses during desert campaigns.
• A camel spider produces a sound like a buzzing chainsaw by stridulating — rubbing its mouthparts together — loud enough to hear from 3 metres away. Scientists believe it's a warning cry, though no one has proven this in the field. What we do know: they're solitary hunters that go silent the moment they detect prey, turning that noise on and off like a living alarm.
• Their hunting strategy defies the rules of small predators: a camel spider will pursue a scorpion 10 times its own size, flipping it on its back and eating it from underneath where the stinger can't reach. They kill insects and small lizards with a ferocity that belies their 10-gram weight. In the Sahara, they're considered the apex hunter of the micro-predator world.
• Female camel spiders lay eggs in burrows and guard them obsessively for weeks, refusing to feed until the nymphs hatch. A gravid female can produce 50 to 200 eggs in a single breeding cycle. This maternal investment — rare for arthropods — means fewer females survive to breeding age, which keeps populations naturally balanced across desert ecosystems.
• The camel spider's flat, armoured body is engineered for sand: it can compress itself to slip through crevices just 2 millimetres wide, and its exoskeleton reflects heat so efficiently that it loses almost no moisture in the open desert. This is why they're nearly impossible to find in daylight — they're already 30 centimetres underground before the sand gets hot.
