- It is the biggest species in its genus, edging out its relatives by a narrow margin. Adult males average about 300 mm in total length and can weigh around 500 g, with the largest recorded male measuring 321 mm and weighing 633.8 g. Females are smaller, typically about 271 mm long, and their tails measure roughly 90 mm in males and 81 mm in females. Hind-foot lengths are 40-43 mm in males and about 39 mm in females, underscoring its overall larger build.
- Its external cheek pouches are lined with fur, a special adaptation for gathering food. The herbivorous gopher forages for vegetable and plant matter, stuffing the large pouches as it moves through its burrow network. Once filled, any surplus is carried back and hoarded in an extensive system of tunnels that can stretch throughout its territory. This storage strategy lets the gopher maintain a steady supply of vegetation even when surface food is scarce.
- At the close of the last ice age, the Missoula Floods surged through the Willamette Valley, almost completely inundating the gopher's range. Scientists think this near-total flooding caused a severe genetic bottleneck, leaving only a few survivors. Those survivors later repopulated the valley after the waters receded, shaping the species' current distribution. The event, dated to about 13 000 years ago, left a lasting imprint on the gopher's evolutionary history.
- Newborn gophers emerge without teeth, eyes or fur, and grow quickly. They remain dependent until roughly six weeks when they are finally weaned.
