• A single California sea hare can stretch up to 75 cm (30 in) when fully extended, yet most adults stay under half that size and weigh as much as 7 kg (15 lb). This massive size makes it one of the largest sea slugs, rivaling the black sea hare, and means its soft body can store enough toxins from red algae to deter most predators, shaping its role as a low-predation, high-impact herbivore in intertidal zones.
• When threatened, the sea hare releases two inks: a reddish-purple ink from the purple ink gland and a milky white opaline from the opaline gland.
