• When threatened, the California seahare releases a cloud of purple ink so thick it blocks its own vision — yet it keeps swimming anyway, relying entirely on touch and smell to escape. The ink isn't just camouflage; it's a chemical decoy that overwhelms a predator's sense of smell, like setting off a stink bomb while running blindfolded through a maze.
• At up to 100 cm long and weighing as much as a newborn human, this is the world's largest sea slug — yet it eats nothing but red algae and will starve rather than switch to other seaweed. Scientists still don't fully understand how it grows so massive on such a restrictive diet.
• The California seahare is born with a brain containing only about 20,000 neurons — roughly 500 times fewer than a fruit fly — yet this tiny cluster of cells produces complex mating behaviour, ink release, and predator avoidance. Neuroscientists use it as a living textbook because each neuron is large enough to see under a standard microscope and thick enough to study with electrodes.
• These hermaphrodites form mating chains of three or more individuals, with each animal simultaneously acting as male and female in a daisy-chain of reproduction. During spawning, a single California seahare can lay 500 million eggs in one season — enough to fill a large swimming pool — yet fewer than one in a million will survive to adulthood.
• Some California seahares have learned to steal defensive chemicals from the red algae they eat, accumulating toxins in their skin without being poisoned themselves. Once loaded with stolen defences, they become so bitter that fish spit them out instantly, turning herbivory into chemical warfare.
