• A single Asian clam can filter 10 litres of water per day — enough to clear the murk from a bathtub in under three hours. They do this by siphoning water through their gills, trapping algae and plankton smaller than a grain of sand. In rivers where they've invaded, they've stripped the water so clear that light now penetrates to depths where it once couldn't, transforming the entire ecosystem in ways scientists are still untangling.
• Asian clams are hermaphrodites that clone themselves — females can reproduce without ever meeting a male, creating genetically identical daughters year after year. A single clam can spawn 400 to 4,000 larvae in a breeding season. This reproductive shortcut is why one clam introduced to a new river can become a billion within a decade, overwhelming native species with sheer numbers.
• They can shut down completely and survive for weeks without water, sealed inside their shells in a state called estivation. When a river dries or temperatures plummet, a clam simply closes its shell tight and waits, burning almost no energy. This survival trick is why they've spread so successfully across North America — a single clam hitching a ride on a boat propeller can survive months of travel and start a new population on arrival.
• Asian clams have perfected an ancient weapons system: they're covered in tiny muscular feet that deploy like microscopic shovels, letting them burrow into river bottoms and wedge themselves between rocks. Once anchored, they're nearly impossible to dislodge — it takes strong currents or dredging to move them. This grip lets them colonise even the roughest, fastest-flowing rivers, outcompeting native clams that lack the same anchoring power.
• In North America alone, they've cost the water management industry over $1 billion since the 1980s by clogging water intake pipes at power plants and municipal systems. A single pipe can become packed with tens of thousands of clams within months, requiring expensive and repeated cleaning. Their invasion has paradoxically revealed how much of modern infrastructure depends on water that was once murkier and harder to filter — and how vulnerable we are to a creature barely bigger than a fingernail.
