• Button's banana slugs are simultaneous hermaphrodites, possessing both male and female reproductive organs. During the act they may perform apophallation, a striking behaviour where one slug chews off its partner's penis, and the species can also reproduce uniparentally with high hatching success.
• The mating season of A. buttoni stretches from February through early September, providing a several-month window for reproductive activity. Within this period, individual copulations are notably prolonged; a study found the average pairing lasted up to seven hours, and some extreme bouts continued for as long as 23 hours.
