- Bushpigs can stride up to a meter tall at the shoulder, yet the biggest boars tip the scales at 150 kg, while most adults hover around 60-80 kg. - Bushpigs are nocturnal foragers that can cover up to 4 km each night, digging for tubers and roots that make up 40 % of their diet in South Africa, while fruit, herbage and animal matter fill the rest. Their opportunistic palate also includes eggs, nestlings, carrion and even small antelope, and they have been seen trailing monkeys to snatch fallen fruit. This dietary flexibility lets them thrive in both pristine forests and cultivated fields, turning them into both seed dispersers and serious agricultural pests.
- Bushpig litters range from one to nine piglets, but most births produce three young after an eight-to-ten-month gestation. The alpha sow builds a three-metre-wide, one-metre-high nest of hay and twigs, where piglets stay for about four months before weaning. Males take the lead in caring for and defending the young, while the sow only returns to nurse. This division of labour speeds up juvenile growth, allowing males to reach sexual maturity at 30 months and females at 18-21 months, ensuring rapid population turnover.
