Burrowing owls rarely dig their own homes; they take over abandoned tunnels dug by badgers, foxes, ground squirrels or prairie dogs. These repurposed burrows become the chambers where the pair lays its eggs and where both adults rest during daylight hours. When a predator approaches the owl darts back into the tunnel for safety, using the same refuge it never built itself.
Burrowing owls defend themselves by mimicking rattlesnake sounds, a strategy that deters predators familiar with the snake's danger. When a threat nears, the owl rushes into its burrow and emits a rattling, hissing noise that closely resembles a rattlesnake's warning call. Researchers describe this as acoustic Batesian mimicry, noting that animals that recognize the true snake often avoid the owl as a result.
In the wild a burrowing owl can reach nine years, and in captivity it can exceed ten years. However, many die early from vehicle collisions and predators such as badgers, coyotes and snakes.
Burrowing owls line their burrow entrances with cattle dung, not to hide their scent but to regulate temperature and lure insects for food. The dung thus creates a microclimate and a steady snack supply.
