• A hairy-nosed wombat produces cube-shaped droppings — the only mammal on Earth that does. Each pellet is roughly the size of a pea, stacked into perfect right angles so they won't roll away. Scientists still aren't sure why, but the leading theory is that these geometric faeces stay put on grass tufts, marking territory with a billboard that doesn't tumble down a hillside. The wombat's rectum may actually be shaped to mould them as they exit.
• Hairy-nosed wombats can hold their breath for 40 minutes underground. They dig burrows up to 10 metres long using front claws that can be longer than a human finger, creating sprawling warrens that stay cool in the Australian heat. Every living Northern hairy-nosed wombat is descended from those 35 founders — a genetic bottleneck so narrow that a single disease could erase the species.
