Fascinating facts about the Brown-Shaded Gray

• Its forewings stretch only 13-20 mm, yet the moth's wing pattern reads like a miniature map. Whitish gray wings show no trace of purple, while a warm brown shade hugs the basal side of the forewing and the distal side of the hindwing. The hindwing is sharply concave near the inner margin and bears two tiny indentations where it bulges at cells Cu1 and Cu2, plus an elliptical hollow discal spot that touches the hindwing margin.
• The brown-shaded gray moth lives year-round in the Gulf states, thriving from Texas up through the eastern United States. It is common in central Texas but absent from southern and western Texas. Because adults can be found any month where the Gulf's warm, moist air persists.
• Caterpillars munch on a menu of woody plants, cherry, oaks, poplars, walnut, willows, and other trees, before pupating and emerging as adults, completing a simple three-stage life cycle of larva, pupa, and adult.
