• Four enormous eyespots stare back from each wing — and they're not decorations. When a bird attacks, the peacock butterfly snaps its wings open like an alarm, flashing these false eyes in a sudden burst. Predators trained on real eyes see a face where there is none and hesitate just long enough for the butterfly to escape. European researchers found that larger eyespots work better, which explains why these four are each the size of a grape seed and rimmed in brilliant iridescent blue.
• A peacock butterfly's caterpillar eats only stinging nettles, which means its body is saturated with toxins that make it taste like poison to birds. The spiky black caterpillar announces this fact by living in plain sight — no camouflage, high on the plant. Adult butterflies inherit that chemical shield and carry it through their entire lives, letting them roost openly in plain daylight without fear of being eaten.
