The brown noddy is the biggest of all noddy species, easily distinguished from the black noddy by its larger build. Adults measure between 38 and 45 cm in length and span 75 to 86 cm from wingtip to wingtip, giving it a noticeably broader silhouette. Its plumage is a uniform dark chocolate-brown, contrasting with the pale-grey or white crown and forehead that frame its head. These combined dimensions and colours make it instantly recognisable among its relatives.
It inhabits tropical seas across the globe, ranging from Hawaii through the Pacific Ocean to the Tuamotu Archipelago and Australia, and from the Red Sea across the Indian Ocean to the Seychelles and Australia, extending into the Atlantic from the Caribbean to the remote islands of Tristan da Cunha. One of its four recognised subspecies, A. galapagensis, is confined to the Galápagos Islands.
Both parents share incubation duties, keeping the single egg warm for a period of 33 to 36 days. Each adult takes turns staying on the nest for one or two days while its mate returns from sea to feed, ensuring continuous protection. The egg itself is a pink-cream colour marked with lilac and chestnut spots and measures about 52 mm by 35 mm.
The brown noddy lives in colonies and prefers to build its home high up, often on cliff ledges or perched among short trees and shrubs where the wind is steady and predators are scarce. When a suitable perch is unavailable it will sometimes place its nest directly on the bare ground, though this is rare. Its nest is a simple platform constructed from gathered sticks and twigs, providing a stable base for the single egg.
The brown noddy supplements its catch of squid and fish with fruit, favoring the berries of the screw pine. It also catches small squid, other molluscs, aquatic insects and fish such as sardines and anchovies.
