• A brown agouti's teeth never stop growing, yet they stay sharp as chisels because the animal gnaws on seeds and nuts thousands of times a day — wearing them down at exactly the same rate they elongate. This dental arms race has been running for millions of years, and if an agouti ever breaks a tooth, it's a death sentence because the opposing tooth will eventually pierce its skull.
• Brown agoutis are the architects of the rainforest. They bury up to 1,000 seeds per day in scattered caches across the forest floor, then 'forget' about 90% of them — accidentally planting the trees that will tower overhead in 50 years. Without agoutis, some of the Amazon's largest trees would never regenerate after a storm knocks down the parent.
• A brown agouti can leap 2 metres straight up when startled, propelled by hind legs that are so powerful relative to their body weight they're comparable to a human high-jumper launching from standing still. They can sustain a 24 km/h sprint through dense undergrowth that would trap most predators, making them nearly uncatchable on ground.
• Female brown agoutis are the only sex that initiates mating, and they do it by spraying urine directly at males from up to a metre away — a chemical advertisement of fertility that's so powerful males can detect it from across the forest and come running. Courtship is a chase, and the female only stops running when she's decided the male is worth her time.
• Brown agoutis are one of the few rainforest rodents that stay active in daylight, making them crucial prey for harpy eagles — the most powerful bird of prey in the world, with talons the size of grizzly bear claws. They're also one of the few animals that actively hunt snakes, using speed and aggression to kill pit vipers and coral snakes by biting at the head before venom can strike.
