- At just over half a meter long, the brown agouti measures an average 61 cm (24.01 in) and tips the scales at 1.8 kg (3.96 lbs), making it a compact but hefty forest forager. Its orange-brown coat hides a darker head, rump and back. Despite its size, it falls prey to the South American jaguar.
- The brown agouti's home stretches from central and southeastern Peru eastward into Brazil's Acre, Amazonas and Rondônia states, then southward to a thin strip of Bolivia, though scientists still argue over its exact southern limit. Some researchers think the range stops in northern Bolivia, while others point to populations once thought to be Azara's agouti in northern Argentina, central Bolivia and western Paraguay that actually belong to this species.
- Once lumped with the Central American agouti, the brown agouti earned its own species badge after multivariate statistical analysis and clear morphological differences emerged. Its orange-colored body, darker head and back, and distinct skull structure set it apart from its reddish-brown cousin.
