• A brook trout's scales contain a hidden calendar. Each winter, growth slows and leaves a faint ring in the bone — just like a tree. Researchers count these rings to age a fish: a 7-year-old might have 7 visible marks. This is how we know some brook trout live past 15 years, and why a single fish tells the story of every drought and warm spell it survived.
• Brook trout taste the water around them through receptors across their entire body — not just their mouth. They can detect a single drop of salmon scent in an Olympic swimming pool. This sensory web lets them navigate pitch-black streams at night and hunt in the dark, making them apex predators of their creeks despite weighing less than a coffee mug.
• Cold water is their passport and their cage. Brook trout need streams below 21°C to survive long-term; above that, they suffocate slowly because cold water holds more oxygen. Climate change is shrinking their range metre by metre — some populations in the southern Appalachians are retreating 100 metres uphill per decade, climbing toward mountain tops with nowhere left to go.
• The coaster trout population of Lake Superior is a second life strategy encoded in their genes. These brook trout spawn in streams but migrate to the open lake as juveniles, where they grow three times faster than their landlocked cousins. A coaster can weigh 2 kg — giants compared to typical brook trout — before returning upstream to breed, a behavioural gamble that only works when the lake stays cold.
• A male brook trout's jaw transforms into a hook at spawning time, curving downward like a salmon's — except it's driven by the same hormones that make him aggressive toward rivals. He'll stake a gravel patch in shallow water and defend it with charges and nips, a 10-week breeding season where he stops eating entirely, burning through his body reserves like a lit fuse, often dying weeks after mating.
