• The Brazilian guinea pig's tail is virtually absent, measuring only about 2.4 mm. This minute tail contrasts with its relatively large body, which reaches an adult length of roughly 272 mm and weighs around 637 g. Such proportions give it a sleek, elongated silhouette compared with domesticated relatives. Its tiny tail is essentially a vestigial remnant rather than a functional appendage.
• Cavia aperea can be successfully mated with the domestic guinea pig, Cavia porcellus, producing hybrid offspring. However, many hybrid females become infertile in successive generations, which curtails the viability of long-term breeding programmes. This infertility means that while hybrids can be created, they are unlikely to sustain a self-reproducing population over time.
• Rather than digging burrows, the Brazilian guinea pig constructs an intricate network of surface tunnels that are 8 to 12 cm wide, weaving a maze across open grassland. These tunnels are used for movement and shelter, allowing the animal to stay above ground while remaining protected. The species is diurnal, emerging in the early morning and again at dusk to forage, so the tunnel system supports its daily activity pattern.
