• At 56 km/h, the patas monkey is the fastest primate on Earth — faster than a greyhound, faster than Usain Bolt's top sprint speed. They've swapped the climbing life of their tree-dwelling cousins for open savanna where escape by pure speed beats hiding in branches. Their long legs, lightweight frame, and stiff spine work like a cheetah's, proving that primates can abandon the forest and win on the ground.
• A patas troop uses what scientists call a 'sentinel system' — while others feed on the ground, one monkey climbs into a tree and scans for eagles, lions, and hyenas. The moment danger appears, that sentinel barks a specific alarm call that sends the entire group sprinting in a coordinated direction. Different calls mean different predators: each one tells the troop exactly where to run.
• Male patas monkeys grow a distinctive reddish coat and drooping white moustache, but they're also seasonal ghosts. During mating season they stake out territories and defend them fiercely, then vanish for months — leaving females and young in stable groups while males wander alone or form bachelor bands. It's one of the few primate societies where males are almost expendable after breeding.
• A patas monkey can survive on grass and seeds so poor in nutrition that other primates would starve. Yet they're not protected in most countries the way elephants or lions are — they're classed as 'near threatened' despite losing vast populations. Their speed that made them survivors on the savanna offers no defence against human guns and expanding agriculture.
