About the Blue Manakin

The blue manakin (Chiroxiphia caudata) is a strikingly vivid bird of the Pipridae family, measuring about 15 cm (5.9 in) in length and weighing roughly 25.6 g (0.90 oz). The adult male dazzles with an entirely bright blue body, contrasted by black wings, tail, and head, save for a flash of red on the crown. Females and juveniles wear a muted olive-green, with juvenile males initially resembling the females before acquiring the red crown, black facial sides, and finally the full blue plumage of the adult male. Both sexes possess elongated central tail feathers, a trait that once inspired the now-abandoned name “swallow-tailed manakin.” In the wet lowland and montane forests of the Atlantic Forest, spanning south-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and far north-eastern Argentina, these sparrow-sized birds thrive even in heavily degraded former forest. Their social world revolves around lekking arenas where one alpha, one beta, and a few gamma males occupy a 100 m² plot, each perch perched about a meter above ground on vines or lianas. The alpha and beta meticulously clear moss, leaves, and twigs to keep the display perch gleaming white, a stage for the males’ elaborate songs and acrobatic dances that lure hypergamous females. Remarkably, up to 90 % of males never mate, a testament to the intense sexual selection that drives their spectacular courtship rituals, a behavior captured in the BBC’s The Life of Birds series.
