• A starling's eye is positioned so far back on its head that it has a 340-degree field of vision — nearly a full circle — without turning its head. Only a thin wedge directly behind them is invisible. This evolved because starlings forage on the ground where predators arrive from any angle, and the wraparound vision lets them spot a hawk diving from above while pecking at seeds.
• When starlings migrate in autumn, flocks of up to a million birds move together in synchronized waves that look like smoke, a phenomenon called a murmuration. Each bird watches only its seven nearest neighbors and copies their movements with a 100-millisecond delay, creating cascading waves of direction change across the whole flock — a pattern so fluid it confuses and disorients hunting raptors trying to pick out individual targets.

Within 130 years they outcompeted native species and became the continent's most abundant bird, a reminder that a single human impulse can rewire an entire continent's ecology.
